This movie was.. not good, in my opinion. No explanation for what was going on, no closure in the end, nothing. Just a series of strange happenings. Why was the world freezing over? Why did a single volcano solve the problem? Why was Budori always forgetting to search for his sister for several years at a time? So many questions, no answers. My rating? 4/10.

I liked the movie, even though it was vague and left you to figure things out for yourself. If you have watched much anime you know that in some they refrain from blatantly showing death. Although if you think about a movie as you watch it and not just blindly watch whats happening, you take notice immediately the situation that befalls the people of the mountains and in the end if you put 2 and 2 together it does come full circle and make some kind of sense. In the beginning we know nothing of the scientists so we do not know whats caused the cold. My theories are as follows. The scientists had begun preventing volcanic calamities in the beginning of the movie which slowly started effecting the climate. It is never said that the people of the mountains moved away yet we stopped seeing them almost all together which leaves you to your imagination wither they moved or died. But if you think about it Budori’s parents said they were lucky to get that one small black potato. Then his father leaves to “go look for food and is immediately not seen even though the snow wasn’t the level of a blizzard. Then again presumably days later their mother knows that there isn’t enough food for herself and her children to survive much longer so she tells them she is going to look for their father and points out to Budori that there is a little food left then vanishes in the same manor as her, I will say, presumably late husband. Finally we see Budori crushing up what looks to be grass in a bowl while his sister literally looks like is in the hands of death itself and rightfully so if anything at all all they’ve had to eat was possibly a loaf of bread and this is where it gets really theoretical. I think Neri subconsciously called the “judge” as he was called, even though she said she wasn’t really hungry anymore she was holding the fork as if waiting for food and losing strength quickly. Then a mystery man appears magically in a blue tornado asking her if she was hungry and then whisking her away with Budori in pursuit until he falls and experiences what can only be described as a spirit world, which throughout the movie he visits a few times accidentally. When I first saw floating cats with little balls of blue light I thought to myself, yup he’s dead this is a spirit world and these are angels or some kind of soul keepers. This was quickly dispelled/changed however by the progression of the story. Now to explain as Jordan above put it, how did he forget his sister for years at a time. I can answer that quite easily as he was only shown thinking about his family while in the spirit world, he even saw his mother and father, until he worked at the scientific research center when it was brought up that “we all know what you went through in the mountains” which they never showed so we again don’t know what was said, wither he said they died or what. That’s blatantly saying you lost everyone, friends and family. Which fits into my theory perfectly. I mean who wants to revisit the fact they saw their sister carried away by some mystery wizard? As for the writers no one wants to show a child die, certainly not from starving to death right after loosing their parents, so being whisked away right before falling out is a kid safe method. I’m sure we all remember Bambi’s mother, death by boomstick, what if they just showed her vanishing into the forest with a mystical buck? Much more kid friendly no? Back to this movie, and this is what seals the theory that the place he visited was the spirit world, for me at least, and that the scientists caused the freezing by trying to save people. Budori has presented his theory on how to save the world and is turned down and while hes brooding in his room hes visited by the same guy who whisked away Neri, only this time he asks him if he wants to visit the very volcano he wants to make erupt. He wanted that just as much as his sister really wanted food. Now he had no way to make the volcano erupt unless you want to think he flung himself into the magma and boom miracle. But a miracle did in sense take place. When the Judge took him it can be thought that he sacrificed himself and the bright light burst we saw was in exchange for his life and that he never really went to the island but to the spirit world in exchange and the effects of the volcano exploding took place as we saw the magma was gone from the crater in the end and the world flourished. Which to answer Tammy, yes I believe he died and this can be proven by the sheer fact the story teller never again mentioned him alive. Again this is just my theory with evidence provided during the film and just a little thought.
